CHASE (DERU REMIX)
Last week I announced that in February, I asked nine artists to re-envision We Are Rising to celebrate the anniversary of its creation. I also invited YOU to remix the album art for the new cover. How’s it coming? Let me know!
So in advance of a proper release I’ll be streaming some of the remixes/reworkings here, along with a little Q&A about each. We started with Alias’ remix of Flickers, and today I’m happy to present Deru’s wild, vivid, and unexpected take on Chase.

SL: I was surprised by your choice of Chase to remix. Was there something special about that song that made you want to get in and rework it?
D: I really liked the chasing patterns you did with the horns and winds. I felt like there was a lot to play with in the recordings. Also the song was short, so I figured I could expand on a few of the ideas. It might be one of the lesser known songs on the album but sometimes it’s easier to remix songs that you don’t know as well. It’s hard for me to hear “Flickers” any other way than the way it is for instance.
SL: For the geeks, can you tell me a little something technical about how u made the track?
I used a lot of delay in this one. I washed out the horns and winds with delay so it turned into a wall of 32nd notes that then fed into a slowly modulating low-pass Moog filter from UAD to give it some more life. I then distorted the crap out of your kick drum using a plugin called “Devastor” and that became the driving element in the beat sections, along with a compressed and distorted version of your drummer playing 32nd notes on drum hardware (
that drummer is shit-hot btw).
SL: What record or artist is getting a lot of plays in your speakers right now?
Well that changes week-to-week but right now I’m playing a lot of
Robot Koch’s new record. The Drive Soundtrack is cool - I like Cliff Martinez’s scores a lot. Oh, and The Meters “Just Kissed My Baby” - I’m teaching myself the drum part.
