i like geek-out questions, so here’s an answer in kind: i always try to consider space as an aspect of each sound. some elements i want to exist in space, and others i want to exist inside your head (for lack of a better way to describe it… and i’m not just talking about dry vs wet). i capture room sound, yes, but more importantly i design rooms using altiverb that compliment the particular timbre and expression of the instrument, or group of instruments/sounds. i also dig dark mono plates, in particular (altiverb’s EMT 140 is great). my sequencer is digital performer, and motu’s proverb is weirdly great. i also take care to treat the reverb bus with the same reverence as the dry signal, considering EQ, compression, stereo placement, and even more creative things like subtly changing the pitch of the wet signal to add depth to the sound.
